History

  • Fr. Murray Abraham, SJ - first started working in kurseong in 1959.
  • Served as headmaster at St. Alphonsus School.
  • He started St. Alphonsus Social and Agricultural Centre in 1975.
  • Through the years, St. Alphonsus Social and Agricultural Centre ( SASAC ) has brought together people from across the world for the common goal of working together to help the poor raise themselves out of poverty.

Projects

  • education, hostel, school, earn and learn program [200 school going children]
  • agriculture, smvg [square meter vegetable gardening] /mashroom cultivation
  • poultry
  • animal husbandry[dairy/piggery],
  • fishries
  • forestry, promoting use of cng  /cooking gas /
  • housing,
  • use appropriate technology: brick making, electric works, carpentry, wielding works,
  • tailoring
  • weaving
  • sweater knitting
  • and many more.

April 2006: a financial crisis arose in part due to the Indian government’s stricter enforcement on rules affecting foreign funds flow that affected the organization. At SASAC, all operations were virtually been halted and workers laid off or left.

In the year 2010 Fr. J. M. Abhraham started SOCIETY OF JESUS AGRICULTURAL AND SOCIAL INSTITUTE (SOJASI) with the similar vision in Chimney.

Fr. Murray Abraham SJ, passed away on 28 August 2012 ……at Flame of Hope in Matigara.
